I spent a few days in the beautiful Roanoke Valley. Although my wonderful wine women of West Virginia were not with me physically they were there in spirit.
Usually when I am with my gal pals we drink and have some retail therapy time. I didn’t want to disappoint them so I want out on a mission. I found this lovely country store that had the most wonderful produce, jams and jellies and baked goods. If you are in the Daleville area check out Ikenberry Orchards.
The Fincastle Vineyards and winery is only 20 miles north of Roanoke and their wines are sold at a few stores in the area. Luckily I found one. I was leaning toward the Cabernet Franc since the label said it was a dry red. It had the blackberry and black cherry notes that I enjoy in a red wine but it also had hints of tobacco which having a Mom who had breast cancer I try to stay away from things that are known to raise the chances of causing cancer. So I decided to pass on that one even though it might be a really delicious wine and go with the Rose.
I haven’t tried the wine yet but once I do I will write an update.
The Wine Women of West Virginia took a road trip to the beach last weekend. This was no ordinary weekend. It was Cinco de Mayo and Derby Weekend. And if it couldn’t get any better, Ocean City was hosting its annual Springfest weekend. There is only one word to describe the weekend, FABULOUS!
It was raining when we pulled into Ocean City but that did not deter us from having fun. We decided to head to Berlin, MD.
In case you are not familiar with this very beautiful town, watch Runaway Bride with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. Berlin is where the movie was filmed although they changed the name to Hale. It is such a lovely town to visit. If you are in the Ocean City area GO To BERLIN.
We started at The Globe for lunch. It is located in a hundred year old building that formerly housed the Globe Theater. There is a good selection of menu items. They serve a delicious cream of crab soup and the Turkey Reuben was delish. I don’t know about you but I love Reuben Sandwiches. But let us not forget that we were there on Cinco de Mayo and you guessed it Margaritas were the drink of the day. Naturally we all had to try one after all you can’t pass up a good margarita that just happens to be the drink special of the day. It would be rude and we are not rude.
After lunch we did a little retail therapy. I found this very pretty antique pendant in one of the shops and a couple of Vera Bradley items at the Victorian Charm. Returning to The Runaway Bride for a moment, The Victorian Charm was the Bridal Shop in the movie. The picture at the top of this post is the Hotel Atlantic where the Richard Gere character stayed in the movie.
One great thing about shopping in the Berlin Shops, the people who work there are so nice. They love to talk and share stories. You just don’t get that everywhere.
After walking around Berlin for several hours we headed back to Beach Babes Happy Place. After a very rainy day the sun came out so we were out on the deck. We technically are a wine club so we decided to take advantage of the break in the weather and have wine and cheese on the deck. All and all a great day!
Our wine club is very fortunate. We have two wonderful retreats for a girls weekend. You have heard me talk about the cabin but our Beach Lady Sharon and her husband have a beautiful place on Assawoman Bay. Yes I said Assawoman and it is in the Ocean City area. The picture in this post is sundown and I can tell you there is nothing more relaxing than sitting with a glass of wine on her deck watching the sun go down.
Sharon calls it her Happy Place and I can so understand why. We have a different routine when we go to the beach. Walking the boardwalk is the best. Last year we went in October. You can’t really go swimming but the boardwalk is divine. No big crowds, same great vendors, no bumping into people when you walk. There is a slight chill in the air meaning no sweating. I hate to sweat!
Berlin, Md is not too far away. It was voted one of the top 20 small towns in America of 2016. We had a great lunch there with of course several bottles of wine. That was followed by some serious retail therapy. It was so great to get away with all my wine ladies and relax. There is nothing like a little Wine time at the beach unless it is Wine time in the mountains.
